Rain, Rain, Go Away...

My sister Liz told me about an old clunker she once bought. She lived in Florida where there are often huge downpours. The first time she drove the car in the rain, she said she felt the nose of the car rising. Finally, she was having trouble seeing over the hood of the car.

When she got home she opened the trunk and it was full of water. She bailed it out, got a hammer and screwdriver and banged holes in the bottom of the trunk.

She then told me about her friend in Florida whose car roof leaked. She taped an umbrella to the back of her seat so she wouldn't get wet.

\\

These are the things poor people do to get by.

My first husband and I had a car that had a hole in the floor of the front passenger side. I could see the road speeding by as we drove along. It didn't bother us too much. At least we had a car!

I can so identify with this!
I have done lots of hasty creative repairs to make things last

Florida could use a good downpour, Belle. It's too dry again and we are running our sprinklers to keep lawns green. If the drought continues water restrictions will be imposed and we'll have a sun baked, brown lawn.

Those heavy downpours can be terrifying if you're driving down the highway at full speed. The cloudbursts often come from nowhere and before you have time to react you're stuck in heavy traffic with zero visibility. Hydroplaning is another hazard produced by those sudden downpours. Another is the extreme danger of driving into standing water and having your car completely flooded or submerged.

I owned an old car down here that had families of tree frogs living inside! They occupied many unseen nooks and crannies like the wheel wells and the spaces around doors and hatches. I can also remember owning a car with a hole in the floor and watching the road go by as I drove. :)

Have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Belle!

To be fair to her that is a pretty ingenious way of preventing rain, great post as per usual Belle.

Yes, love the cartoons ! These stories did make me smile today. Oh to be poor! What fun people had! (Only joking!).

Diane- I have done things like this too. I duct-taped my mother's chair legs when they started breaking. She was very happy!

Jeanie- Thanks, Hon.

Tom-I'm sorry about the dry weather out there. It must be worrisome. We have had water restrictions in the past when no one could water their lawns.

I loved your story of the tree frogs! Very funny, but a pain. It is nice we have holey cars in common!

Claudia- Thanks, Sweetie.

Matthew- Well, you do what you can when you have no money. Thanks.

Hi Sherry- Yes, they were good ideas I think.

Diane- One thing about being poor; you learn to appreciate the simplest pleasures of life. God bless.

Remember the good old days - when all you wanted or cared about was getting from point A to B and who cared what it looked like???

My friend in college had an old beatle (not the new version) anyway, it had a hole in the back door, much like the hole you described in your car. i'd always stick my hand through it and wave at other cars. don't know if they saw me though. i'm sure i freaked a few people out. :)

LOL! But the thing is, if it happens to you, it doesnt seem to strange - it's when you're in somebody else's car that a whole in the floor freaks you out ;D

Well, you have to do what you have to do. That's what makes life all the more fun!

What a flood of car memories this has invoked. I definitely have been poor. Yes, holes in the floor boards and leaks etc.

Dearest Belle,
Oh, so sorry for my belated comment.
I wished to say that your cartoons are so creative and story telling♡♡♡ I enjoyed them very much with the enlarged ones.
So sorry about the trouble, though.

Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*
