Which Way is the Wind Blowing?

The teacher at medic school warned the students about sour gas, which can kill you in seconds. When you hear the siren, you are supposed to run the opposite way of the wind.

Christine went up north and found it hard to stop looking at wind socks.

The guys working there told her they don't think about it unless the siren goes off and I think she got that way too. You can't stay hyper-alert 24 hours a day!

It gets windy here as well, once I had the boot open of my 1.5 tonne Ford and the wind caught it and it slowly blew out the driveway and into the street. Recently my lightweight Toyota ute blew along the street uphill because I'd neglected to put the handbrake on.

Christine was very brave to take on the challenge of working up north in that rugged and dangerous environment. At first I assumed the smell of rotten eggs would be enough to alert workers to a sour gas leak. Upon further reading, however, I learned that a concentration of hydrogen sulfide detectable to the human nose is enough to cause adverse health effects. Workers have died when exposed to high concentrations of the gas in a confined space with no opportunity for it to be diluted by the wind. I realize there were many hazards to which your daughter was exposed up there and I admire her courage.

We have big wind here often. I'm glad she was able to get to where she wasn't having to watch it all the time. She is a brave woman to do that kind of work!

I can understand her being hyper-alert in the beginning, but I'm glad she relaxed a little after talking to the guys.

Hi Belle. Hope all is well with you and the family. I agree that Christine is very brave to be working up there. Loved the little drawings of the windsocks! Enjoy your weekend.

We don't have wind socks over here but that's cool all the same Belle. Great post as usual.

Hi everyone and thanks so much for dropping by. I kind of screwed up on this blog. She was watching the wind because of sour gas. If the siren goes off you have to run the opposite way of the wind. I'll fix that mistake now. The writing in the first picture isn't big enough.

Fun and educational post. I have never heard of "sour gas" and had no idea people faced such danger. You are brilliant in your illustrations and story telling.
