My granddaughter Faith (14 yrs. old), came down to visit one morning.
Faith- "Grandma, I need to know about the Holocaust. People talk about it and I don't know what they're talking about."
Me- "You don't want to know about the Holocaust."
Faith- "Yes, I do."
So I told her about Viktor Frankl and how his wife and parents went straight to the "showers" when they arrived at Auchtwitz. I told her about Corrie Ten Boom and how her sister died - I told her about Anne Frank, but she already knew that story.
Me- "Now you don't have to learn any more about the Holocaust. It's too horrible."
Faith's mom came downstairs the next day and I told her what Faith said. "I know. She's been reading about it on the computer all day."
Great.
Well, maybe it will help her to be more compassionate. Maybe it will teach her what can happen in a dictatorship, although I guess you don't need to have a dictatorship any more to torture and kill people.
