Hope and Grandma's 16th Birthdays.

My granddaughter Hope (15 yrs.old) is not allowed to bring her cell phone to the dinner table. The other night, her sister Faith sat down for dinner and saw Hope texting on her phone. She was hiding the phone on her lap under the table.

Faith said to me, "Grandma, the table is GLASS!" Everyone could see her doing it!"

I love my grandchildren. My life would be so boring without them.

Hope is turning 16 in March. She has been watching a TV program called,

My Super Sweet 16.

It is about Sweet 16 parties of the rich. Hope would like a party like that. She wants to rent a beautiful hall and have a DJ and dancing. I'm afraid it would cost at least $2,000. We can't do it.

One girl on the TV show threw an Hawiian party that cost her parents $203,000. Almost all the girls on the show get a car from their parents too. Hope and Faith watch this show all the time and I think they believe these parties are for everyone.

Hmm.

Should I dare tell you all what I did for my 16th birthday?

I'll give you a hint. It was illegal.

I bought a $10 baggie of pot and invited about 5 girls over. We sat in my room and listened to music and smoked the pot out on the balcony and then the roof of my house. Yep, we had a great time and it only cost $10.  Young people just don't know how to have cheap fun any more.

That's one of the many many things I hate about these reality shows...it's NOT real life. Who wants to bring up a 16 year old with such a false sense of what's important in life?

I'm sure she's going to have a very happy birthday...friends and family that love her will make it was is most important. A day she is remembered with love and joy!
Hugs~

Dearest Belle,
I am not for these extravagant party, either.
Sorry that my bad English ablity prevents me from figuring out what you did for your party well; but I understand you had fun with your friends with more enjoyable way♬♬♬
Would becoming 16th kind of special for your culture? I don't remember doing special thing for our birthdays when teenage days. These are for more little
ones, I think. Coming of aged day is celebrated in a big scale here.
Love you always, xoxo Miyako*

Oh, how funny! And you're right- those shows like that one are just terrible.

Happy early birthday to her! My daughter will be 16 in June and reminds me almost daily that her driver's license is just around the corner.

One night's casino (or bingo) winnings will buy Hope the party of her dreams, Belle. (LOL) Why are so many of us captivated by the lifestyles of the rich and famous? I admit that my parents and I were glued to the TV set every week to watch Michael Anthony change lives by giving away a piece of John Beresford Tipton's fortune "to persons he never even met" on The Millionaire. These days my 14 year old granddaughter seems determined to own a blue "Lambo" (Lamborghini) although it's not clear how she's going to make it happen.

I wish I would have known you in the 60s, Belle. I have no doubt that we would have been besties! (LOL)

Ah, reality shows. I'm glad I no longer have cable. Shows like the one you describe make me weep for future generations. I hope Hope has a wonderful birthday, even if it doesn't quite match the "reality" presented on My Super Sweet 16.

There's not much reality in those reality shows, but that is hard for a 15 year old to see. I don't remember having a party when I turned 16 but I wish I had been invited to yours.

Loved that story about the glass table haha, that kind of thing would make me laugh regardless of who was involved with it.

When it comes to 16th birthday parties I like the sound of yours so much more than I do what any of those Super Sweet 16 shows portrays kids as doing on their 16th. It's stupid and promotes being spoiled but when it's on television and you see all these princesses getting amazing 16th birthdays I guess you can't help but feel like you want the same!

I am with Tom in that I needed to know you in the 60's. My life was oddly very sheltered and innocent from things like alcohol or drugs but if I had been around I would have loved to have been in the group on the balcony trying out that $10 treat. Will be 65 in about a month and never have tried the stuff. Oh well, have a super Thursday Sweet Thang,
Hugs,
Odie

Sush- I am disappointed that Hope and Faith seem to think a lot of girls have these parties so then they feel let down when their parents can't afford it too. TV does show lives that most of us can't live.

Orchid- I'm not sure why turning 16 is important to girls here. I do know that in North America when very rich girls turn 18 they are called debutantes and they go to parties too. It is their formal debut into society and now will be invited to the adult functions.

I was a wild and crazy girl at 16 yrs. old! I wouldn't want my granddaughter to do what I did.

Tempo- Yes, I was a rebel with a cause! Glad you like the page. The photo is of Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. A beautiful place.

Bro- Glad you liked it!

Claudia- I'm glad. hugs

Shelly- It is so exciting to get your driver's license! I'm happy for her.

Tom- My whole family would sit and watch 'The Millionaire' every week. My grandma thought it was real, not just a show.

My grandson Jordan wanted a $40,000 truck once. He didn't want the $3,000 one his mom said she could get. But he finally realized no one was going to buy him a big, brand new truck and took the used one. I don't know why he thought he could have the expensive one.

I seem to have lost some followers because of my little story of my 16th birthday! No sense of ha-ha I guess. I have no doubt we would have been friends then as we are now.

Sarah- Thank you for your kind wishes for Hope. I hope she enjoys her birthday too.

Jeanie- Oh, that is just so sweet. I think we would have had a lot of fun together in our teens!

Matthew- I do think that show is bad for teenagers. I'm sorry it is on TV. Glad you liked the glass table story.

Odie- Oh Odie, count yourself lucky you never got into drugs and drinking. I was a very unhappy teenager - but there were some fun times. I found real joy and happiness when I had children and found God as my friend. Blessings to you and yours.

I think the way that Americana parades wealth in front of the masses is shameful. Everyone has a reality t.v. show. Everyone is wealthy. I'm getting sick of it because all these spoiled kids get all the attention and they seem to be worshiped by everyone else. Our country and how it caters to the super rich is disgusting.

You naughty girl, you! Thanks for sharing your story!

>200K for a sweet sixteen? Are people crazy?

Answer: yes, they are.

Ellie Garratt said...

Argh. I've seen that show. The parents have way too much money!

Happy 16th to your granddaughter. Oh, to be sweet 16 again. For mine I had a group of friends for a sleepover. We watched Dirty Dancing over and over, and all screamed and swooned over Patrick Swayze.

You never fail to make me laugh. I think you really write what the reality was and is. I would not suggest that kind of a party to anyone, although the thousands of dollars people spend on the "My Sweet Sixteenth" TV show is crazy.

Belle said...

Michael- I agree with you. Very few people are rich, but you wouldn't know that from TV.

Lydia- Yes, I was naughty. People are crazy when they have too much.

Ellie- My daughters loved that movie. They memorized the lines from it. I'm glad you had a fun party for your 16th.

Munir- No, I wouldn't want my granddaughter to have a party like mine! That was said in fun. Hugs.

Those reality shows give young girls such unrealistic expectations. Such a party like the ones you described should happen to anyone, no matter the age ONLY if they lived in a world where money was no object. My parents gave me a 16th birthday party and then proceeded to hover all night. I finally got to breakway with my boyfriend and go bowling. Once there he gave me a pre-engagement ring. It was a magic moment.

I hate reality shows - they send all the wrong messages and give rise to hopeless aspirations.

Happy Birthday to Hope. I can't remember my 16th or my 18th - it was 21st birthdays that were regarded as special and I do remember that one.

You were a wild thing, Belle;-)

Hi dear friend. So sorry that I'm not able to get over very much at the moment. I miss you! These reality shows have a lot to answer for. I think it's so sad these days that a lot of youngsters just want to be 'celebrities'. The money spent on those parties for a 16 year old is almost obscene! Take care. Sending blessings and hugs . Your 16th birthday sounded fun!! Boo to those lost Followers!
