Are You My Husband?

Years ago I was at church with my husband. After the service we always hung around the lobby to talk with friends. I saw my best friend standing in a circle of people with a man I thought was my husband (same hair, same height, same jacket). He was facing away from me.

I walked up, leaned on this man, put my arm through his and started talking with her. I could tell she was distracted and I wondered what on earth was the matter with her when she said, "Belle, can I introduce you to Wayne?" She was pointing at the man I was hanging on!

I looked up at this stranger. He was very handsome, even with a bright red face. I began sputtering an apology. But really, to this day I don't know what he could have been thinking? Did he think this was some kind of weird church? Did he think I was lonely? Did he think I was crazy? I don't know and I could never bear to ask my friend. She was laughing so hard I couldn't have asked her then, and later I wanted to forget it ever happened.
