Mom and Science Fiction

Years ago, I asked my mom if she wanted to watch a movie with me. I told her it starred Lloyd Bridges, one of her favorite actors. She asked me what it was about and I read the blurb to her, "Beings from outer space invade a small town."

"Well, I don't usually like science fiction, but I'll watch it," she said.

The movie was quite good, Lloyd was a young, good-looking alien who was falling in love with a local Earth woman.

Mom got up to leave and said, "Well, I can't watch this any more."

"Why not? I cried. "It's really good."

"Yes, but after all he's just a bean, and all I can do is wonder if he is going to turn into a lima bean or a green bean or what?"

"What on earth are you talking about?" I asked.

"You said they were beans from outer space," she said emphatically.

"Be-ings, Mom, Be-ings."

We started laughing so hard we missed some of the movie, but in the end we finished it. Thank goodness Lloyd Bridges never did turn into a bean of any sort.
